The latest Pixar animated film will enchant folks of all ages. It’s about a cute little robot on a trashed and abandoned Earth who accidentally discovers a way for humans to return, and passes on the message to a robot space probe named EVE. Smitten, he follows her back to the human mothership, and discovers a deeper mystery.  While still funny, WALL*E  is a little deeper and quieter than Pixar’s previous films, with incredible artwork.

(FSS) You Don’t Mess with the Zohan Adam Sandler plays an Israeli commando who fakes his own death so he can run off to NYC to become a hairdresser in this comedy. Zohan plays Friday at 7:30 and Saturday & Sunday at 5:00 only. It does not play Monday.

(FSSM) Wanted James McAvoy plays an office drone whose life takes a sudden turn toward the exciting when a butt-kicking Angelina Jolie invites him to join her fraternity of assassins. Turns out he’s inherited super-skills from his estranged father, and Angie’s ready to help him develop his latent talents. Wanted  plays Friday at a special 9:30 show (c’mon, it’s not even dark yet) and Saturday, Sunday & Monday at 7:30.

August 12, 13 & 14 (TWTh) Good Food
This delightful documentary on Northwest small farmers by Mark Dworkin (loyal Clyde projectionist for 35 years) and Melissa Young sold out both of its performances at the Seattle International Film Festival this year. The film is short, so immediately after the Tuesday and Wednesday showings Melissa and Mark will answer your questions about the making of the film and the people and issues involved. After the Thursday showing a few popular local growers will briefly share stories about the ups and downs of farming on Whidbey. As part of Locavore Week several South End restaurants are offering locally-sourced specials, so consider dinner out before the movie, or invite friends over and cook something great from ingredients bought at one of our farmers’ markets. If your interest in eating locally is whetted by the film, check out the free Local Chefs/Local Foods demos being offered at Fair University during the Island County Fair (Fair U schedule at www.island.wsu.edu ).

Will Smith plays a superhero who needs an attitude adjustment in this action comedy. Hancock has saved Los Angeles from disaster lots of times, but he’s trashed it a lot too. However public-relations guru Jason Bateman has a plan to put a little more love in the love/hate relationship the city has with its misunderstood defender. He’s Will Smith, you know, how bad can he be?

August 22-28 (Fri-Thurs) Held over!  The Dark Knight
Summer’s biggest hit is now playing a full week. Actors Christian Bale and Heath Ledger and director Christopher Nolan bring depth and high entertainment values to this story about the Caped Crusader’s attempts to stop that eerie criminal mastermind, The Joker. They’ve elevated what could have been a good old superhero action movie into a true tragic drama about the flexibility of morals—but with really cool special effects. Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, Gary Oldham, and Morgan Freeman offer support. Saturday & Sunday shows at 5:00 & 8:00 due to the length of the film.
Rated PG-13 for intense scenes of violence and some menace

August 29-September 1 (FSSM) Rescheduled! Mamma Mia!
And now for something a little lighter--Meryl Streep starring in a comedy set to the appallingly catchy music of the 70’s pop group ABBA. She plays a single mom who’s never told her daughter the identity of her father. So her daughter secretly invites the three most likely candidates to her wedding in hopes of discovering which one should be walking her down the aisle.  With Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, and Amanda Seyfried.

Our patrons have really been pushing us to show this movie—the stirring true story of how the people of Estonia overthrew a repressive Communist regime using only the power of their cultural identity. These were people who weren’t afraid to go after a more open and democratic society armed only with a song in their hearts. Hopefully it will inspire us all to care more about preserving our own freedoms.

Kevin Costner plays a lovable loser who, despite his 12-year-old daughter’s constant prodding, can’t get much into that whole voting thing. Great comic support from Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, and Stanley Tucci as the Presidential candidates and their advisers.

In 1976 no one took California wine seriously. Until the day a British wine expert actually tried a glass from a tiny winery in some place called Napa Valley, recognized its excellence, and challenged the French to a taste-off. Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman star in the basically true story of the small-town winemakers whose reds and whites first stunned the French. Watch for details of some fun wine-tasting events being planned in Langley around this film.

October 14, 15 & 16 (TWTh)  Man on Wire
Thrilling documentary about the daredevil Philippe Petit, who secretly strung a wire between the tops of the almost-finished World Trade Center towers in 1974, then danced on it 1,350 feet above the ground—without a net—to the wonder of hundreds of thousands of onlookers. The film has the pacing of a heist movie and a host of engaging characters who assisted Petit in this stunt.
